Cyrene or Shahat is an ancient city located in Al-Jabel Al-Akhdar(Green Mountain), a region of about 200Km east of Benghazi.
Cyrene was founded in 631 B.C by some Greek immigrants from the island of Thera, Known today as Modern Santorini.It is very rich in ruins such as The Temple of Apollo. It was built as early as 7th century B.C . The fountain of Apollo is located about 50 meters from the temple.
The Roman Amphitheatre is located at the northwest of the sanctuary of Apollo. The tomb of Battus is in the center of Cyrene on the Agora(The town square). To the east, lies the sanctuary of Zeus, the biggest Greek Doric temple in North Africa. It was built by the Cyrenians in the 6th century B.C.
Cyrene is one of the most complex archaeological sites in the Mediterranean region. It provides an outstanding example of prosperity in the Mediterranean and African world .
Sabratha
Sabratha is situated on the Mediterranean coast, to the west of Tripoli. It was founded by the Phoenicians in the 6th century B.C to serve as a trading post.
The Amphitheatre is a significant monument. It was constructed from pink limestone.
The Temples of Isis, Hercules and Sirapia, the public Bathes, the Mosaics of Jason Magnus and the Capitolium are still outstanding and provide the most prominent features of the city.
The town of Sabratha has grown up in between the ruins, adding a special beauty to this fascinating place, which is marked also by long beaches, making it a wonderful town for holiday makers.
